Quantitative Reasoning on the Psychometric test

Quantitative Reasoning measures how well you use numbers and quantitative concepts to solve problems. In the two-domain format it is 2 scored sections of about 20 minutes each, and it is worth half of the general score.

What it is testing

Not advanced mathematics. The syllabus stops at school algebra and geometry, and almost nothing on the test needs a technique you have not already met. What it measures is whether you can read a situation, choose the shortest route through it, and finish inside about a minute.

That is why speed is a skill here rather than a side effect. Two candidates who both know how to solve a percentage problem can score very differently if one reaches for the formula and the other notices the answer choices are far enough apart to estimate.

The two question families

Questions and problems

The larger family: a stem, four alternatives, one best answer. It spans arithmetic, algebra, geometry and applied word problems.

Graph and table comprehension

A chart or a table followed by questions about it. The arithmetic is usually easy; the difficulty is reading the right cell, noticing the units, and not answering a question about a different row.

Topics Vizo practises

These are the 11 skills the product tracks separately. Your mastery is scored per skill, which is what lets practice concentrate where you are actually losing points rather than marching through a fixed order.

  • Arithmetic and number properties
  • Ratio, proportion and percentage
  • Averages, including weighted averages
  • Powers and roots
  • Algebra and equations
  • Word problems — work, rate, distance, mixtures
  • Counting and combinatorics
  • Probability
  • Plane geometry
  • Solids and volume
  • Graph and table comprehension

Where marks are usually lost

  • Answering the question that was not asked. The stem asks for the increase; the tempting alternative is the new total.
  • Units. Minutes against hours, centimetres against metres, per cent against percentage points.
  • Doing full arithmetic when the alternatives allow estimation. Four spread-out options are an invitation to approximate.
  • Time. Spending four minutes on the hardest question in the section costs the three easy ones at the end of it.

Vizo classifies each wrong answer into one of these kinds rather than only marking it wrong, and brings the pattern back to you — half your losses this week were reading too quickly is a more useful sentence than a score.

How Vizo practises it

Every quantitative question in the bank is verified by re-computing its own arithmetic before it is ever served: the expression, the claimed value and the number in the correct option all have to agree. A question that fails that check never reaches a student. All of the questions are original and written for Vizo.

You can practise one skill at a time or sit a timed section composed to the blueprint. See the format overview for how the sections fit together, and Verbal Reasoning for the other half of the score.
